Jaguar XK150 3.4S Drophead Coupe
The Jaguar XK150 was introduced in the spring of 1957, as a replacement for the XK140 and was available as a fixed and drophead coupé. Whilst the 150 was similar in design to the outgoing model it was considerably more refined. A one piece windscreen replaced the split screen and the wing line no longer dropped as much over the doors. The bonnet was widened, opened down to the wings and on the roadster, the bulkhead was moved back four inches to make the bonnet longer. In the interior, the XK140’s walnut dashboard was replaced by a leather trimmed unit. The launch specification of the XK 150 included SU carburettors, four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive, independent front suspension with wishbones, coil springs, torsion bars and anti-roll bar, rigid rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. The optional 150 “S” variant was introduced in 1959 boasting triple SU carburettors, a revised cylinder head increasing power to 250bhp enabling it to reach 60mph in just over 7.5 secs and onto a top speed of 132mph.

Having left the factory on 22nd June 1959, Chassis No: 827392 was delivered to Henley of London and registered as XMT 150 before acquiring its current number 1522 MW a little over a year later. Invoices in the history issued by F.W Mays & Co Ltd of Dorking Surrey show previous owners in the 1960s including Messer’s Aird, Grogan and Lines.
The Jaguar spent the next twenty-odd years in Chelsea entrusted to Burgess Garage of Drayton Gardens, London SW10. The 150 S benefitted from an extensive engine overhaul at 39,190 miles (reground crankshaft, rebored block, new timing chain, pistons, bearings, valves etc.) in 1971. Extensive paperwork on file shows significant maintenance carried out in the 1980’s including new disc brakes in 1983, a Falcon stainless steel exhaust in 1988 along with overhauled springs and fresh wishbone bushes in 1989.
Further renovation work took place in the early 1990’s, including various chassis repairs undertaken by Kats of Kimpton, Herts. A complete strip and overhaul of the car’s four-speed manual gearbox and overdrive units took place at 77,534 miles. Further invoices on file show the fitting of a new clutch master, slave cylinders, reconditioned fuel pumps and a replacement petrol tank.
The XK 150 S was sold to N. Lawrence esq in July 1993 who commissioned the Jaguar Restoration Centre of Bridport, Dorset to rejuvenate the car shortly afterward. Fitted with new door skins and sidelight pods, the car was finished in it’s original livery / trim of Mist Grey with Red leather upholstery and Black hood by Wren Classics of Shaftesbury, Dorset. Sporting refurbished chrome work and replacement wire wheels, the car was also fitted with a new mohair hood envelope and crank damper in 1995 and 1998 respectively.
