Chevrolet Corvette C1
The Corvette C1 is the first generation of the Corvette sports car produced by Chevrolet. It was decided that Chevrolet needed a two seater sports car to satisfy a growing market which had mainly been dominated by European imports of Jaguars, Alfa Romeos, Mercedes and MG’s. Chevrolet’s designer Harley Earl began design work and a pre-production Corvette prototype was first shown to the public in January 1953 at General Motors Motorama event in New York city. The car proved to be an instant success and was rushed into full production less than six months later with the first car rolling off the production line in June 1953. It was decided that, to keep costs down, the new Corvette would utilise the existing chassis and suspension design from the 1949-1954 Chevrolet passenger vehicles. The body was a first with the Corvette being made in Fiberglass. The drivetrain and passenger compartment were moved back to achieve a 53/47 front to rear weight distribution. The engine was a 235 cu in inline six cylinder with a two speed powerglide automatic transmission. The Corvette continued to evolve during its production and was latterly fitted with more powerful V8 engine options producing close to 270 bhp. In 1958 Chevrolet decided to make the Corvette more contempary and introduced its quad headlamps and additional chrome bumpers. The interior was redesigned with all the dials moving directly in front of the driver. Various other options including; Radio, Heater, Electric windows, Manual or automatic transmission, Heavy duty brakes and suspension.
