Ford Mustang GT350 “Hertz” Fastback Evocation

The first generation of Mustang was launched to the public at the New York World Fair in April 1964 and went on to be one of Fords most successful cars. The most sought after of the Mustang line up was the Fastback derivative.

During 1965, Carroll Shelby agreed a deal with the Hertz Corporation to setup a rental program for the Mustang GT350. Hertz ordered 999 cars which were primarily finished in the now famous livery of Black with Gold racing stripes. With blistering performance, the GT350H quickly became known as the “Rent-A-Racer” with anyone over the age of 25 being able to hire one.

As you might imagine, this venture was popular among the racing enthusiast crowd. In fact, it’s been reported that some renters actually took their rental cars to the track where they would remove the engine and put it in their personal race car. At the end of the race, they’d drop the Cobra engine back into the rental car and return it to Hertz. The idea was to avoid damaging the rental car while boosting the performance of their personal ride. The Mustang GT350 held the production B championship for 3 years in a row in period, and are still very competitive today.
