Mercedes-Benz SL500

The Mercedes-Benz R107 was produced from 1971 through to 1989 and was the second longest single series vehicle produced by the firm, besides the G-Class. They were sold under the SL-Class and SLC-Class model names. The R107 took the chassis components of the mid size Mercedes-Benz W114 model and mated them to the larger engines from the S-Class.

The SL variant was a 2-seat convertible/roadster with standard soft top and hardtop. The SLC (technically C107) derivative was a 2 door hardtop coupe, with usable rear seats and was, in effect, an SL stretched 10 inches (254 mm) with a fixed roof. During the 18 year production run of the 107 some 237,000 107 chassis SL’s were built. About two thirds were sold in the US.

In 1980, the SL received a facelift. Although the styling remained pretty much untouched, there were a raft of technical changes to reflect the new technology that had been included in the 1979 S-Class sister car. The main change was upgrading the standard gearbox from a four to a five speed gearbox and the addition of some new engines. The most sought after the R107 was the range topping SL500. The 500 offered Mercedes 4973cc V8 which produced and impressive 240bhp. This powerful V8 propelled the car from 0-60 mph in just of 7.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 137 mph.

The Mercedes-Benz SL500 offered here at Autostorico is a 1987 example which has covered an indicated 83,606 miles from new. This stunning SL is finished in Sage Green with Beige leather interior and shows just four owners from new on the V5C registration document (although the last two appear to be husband and wife). The car is supplied with original owner’s manual, original toolkit, some earlier MOT’s and copies of earlier registration documents.
